SAN ANTONIO, TX

The Older but Wiser Lutherans (OWLS) of Grace Lutheran Church enjoyed a fun-filled and educational trip to San Antonio, TX and other points of interest in October, 2010.  The group left Grace early on the 24th and returned the evening of the 31st. (In time to go Trick or Treating).

On Sunday. 10/24, we spend the day on the bus en route to Houston, chauffeured by Humberto, our very capable and affable Motor Coach Operator.

The links below will lead you to a pictorial history of our trip.

10/25, left our motel at 9 AM, spent the morning at Katy Mills, Katy, TX, for shopping and lunch.  Left Katy at 1 PM, arrived at our motel in San Antonio, checked in, and boarded the bus again for a Cracker Barrel dinner.

  • 10/26, we met Janie, our Step-on Tour Guide for the first time who led us on a driving tour of San Antonio that included a visits to the King William Historic District, the San Fernando Cathedral, the SAS Shoe Factory, lunch and shopping at the historic El Mercado Market Square, some free time at the Rivercenter Mall, then to the famed River Walk for dinner and a boat tour.  A full, 11-hour day.
  • 10/27, boarded the bus at 8 AM and headed to Fredericksburg, TX, home of The National Museum of the Pacific War which offered an interesting, detailed and educational perspective of the World War II Pacific War.  Lunch at one of the many German Bistros in town, touring the many unique shops in Fredericksburg, a quick trip to the Torri di Pietra Vineyards, and then to the LBJ Ranch and the Texas Whitehouse in Stonewall, TX.  Left Stonewall at 4 PM and drove to the Enchanted Springs Ranch in Boerne, TX, where we were enjoyed a BBQ dinner and western entertainment headed by Pistol Packin' Paula.  We returned to our motel at 8 PM, another full, fun-packed day.
  • 10/28, boarded the bus at 8:30 AM, picked up our tour guide and made an unscheduled stop at the picturesque Japanese Sunken Garden.  From there we toured the Mission San Jose, the "Queen of the Missions, then drove to the Institute of Texan Cultures.  Then on to lunch at the Rivercenter Mall, after which we viewed the IMAX film "The Price of Freedom" relating to the battle at the Alamo.  After the film we walked across the street to the Alamo and spent about 2 hours touring the shrine.  Then on to dinner at the Old San Francisco Steakhouse.
  • 10/29, boarded the bus headed to our motel in Houston, but en route stopped at the George Ranch Historical Park.

10/30, boarded the bus at 8 AM and headed to Pensacola.  About 6:30 a happy, but weary group of OWLS arrived at Grace.
